“We will not stop there”: Barca Femeni star Alexia Putellas calls for continued advocacy for women’s rights amidst Rubiales scandal

Barcelona Femeni star Alexia Putellas delivered an impassioned speech while accepting the Medal of Honour from the Catalan Parliament. As captain of the World Cup champions, she used the platform to address crucial issues related to women’s rights and gender equality.

“We feel passion for our job, that of being football players. We are here to stay, to help those who will come because there is still a long way to go,” Putellas declared.

She emphasized the challenges that women, both in and out of football, continue to face, highlighting the recent issues with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Putellas called for consensus, courage, and leadership from institutions to ensure that women are never subjected to situations involving disrespect or abuse again.

“We need consensus, courage, and leadership from the institutions, and that is why we will not stop here. We will join those who have fought before us. We will join together for the effort we make every day, and we will join all the girls and boys who today dream of being like us. We will not fail you, long live women’s sport, and long live Barca!”

The reference to the RFEF relates to the controversial incident where RFEF president Luis Rubiales forcefully kissed Barcelona legend Jenni Hermoso on the lips during World Cup celebrations. This act sparked public outrage and ultimately led to Rubiales’ resignation from his post, shedding light on the importance of respecting personal boundaries and advocating for women’s rights in sports and beyond.
