Unveiling the Origins: Why Barcelona Fans are Called ‘Culers
You might have come across the term ‘culers’ referring to FC Barcelona fans or even the players themselves. It’s not just a randomly chosen word; there’s a fascinating history behind it that gives meaning to how supporters of the Blaugrana club are identified.
To trace the origins of this term, we need to go back many years when Barcelona didn’t play at the Camp Nou. Between 1909 and 1922, the team played home matches in a much smaller stadium with significantly less capacity. The venue, popularly known as ‘La Escopidora,’ accommodated merely six thousand spectators and had a two-tiered stand. As you can imagine, this capacity fell short for the strong support the Catalan team already enjoyed at that time. Consequently, to fit as many spectators as possible, many had to sit on the edges of the higher stands.
