Guille Fernández Shines in Algarve Tournament, Fueling Excitement for Barcelona’s Future
Without Bergvall but with Guille Fernández, the jewel from the academy is making waves at the Algarve Tournament. The 15-year-old midfielder from Barcelona scored four of the seven goals against Germany, hinting at the possibility of becoming the next player to debut with the first team without reaching the age of majority.
When Lucas Bergvall (18 years old) chose Tottenham’s offer over Barcelona, there was disappointment, but also confidence that the position of attacking midfielder was well-covered with young talents from the academy. The club had already invested in the future this summer with players like Noah Darvich, but other names had long been identified as midfielders with potential for the first team. One of them, Guille Fernández, is currently making waves at the Algarve Tournament with the Spanish U-17 national team.
On Saturday, he scored four goals in the 7-0 victory against Germany. His outstanding performance at just 15 years old didn’t surprise Spanish U-17 coach Jose Lana, who had taken Cubarsí, Fort, Guiu, Bernal, Cuenca, Prim, Junyent, and Hernández to the last U-17 World Cup. Barcelona is also well aware of the player’s caliber, and they believe he could be another case of early integration into the first team—capable of competing at the top level before turning 18.
This season, Fernández became the second-youngest debutant in Barcelona’s history in the Youth League (with Lamine being the youngest). He has been included in the reserve team’s squad and trained under Xavi’s guidance. Throughout the season, he showcased his ability to be a threat between the lines, with a powerful stride and excellent skill in bypassing opponents with his dribbling. His extensive range as a midfielder and a keen goal-scoring instinct make him stand out, aided by a physicality beyond his age that allows him to match up against older players.
Jorge Mendes has already taken notice of his potential, including him in the roster of players he represents. In his sixth season in the Barcelona academy, Fernández is confirming his ability to provide assists and unleash venomous shots. These qualities are also evident as he represents the U-17 national team in the ongoing tournament.
Spain will face the host Portugal on Monday and conclude the tournament on Wednesday against the Netherlands, with Guille emerging as one of the team’s key players.
