Journalist Clarifies Deco’s Statements in Controversial Interview

Afonso de Melo, the journalist who conducted the interview with Deco, has sought to clarify some of the statements made by FC Barcelona’s sporting director. This clarification comes directly on the website of ‘Nascer do Sol,’ immediately following the interview text, under the title: ‘Editor’s Note: Deco and the Paradigm (Correction to the Interviewee’s Words).’

“The phrase uttered by Deco in the magazine interview requires clarification. It is neither Deco’s decision nor his will to change the method or paradigm, but it was Xavi who indicated that path with his departure. The deficient explanation in the text does not imply Deco’s position nor does it reflect his will. The note should be understood as Deco intends it, and that is not his stance. The misinterpretation of the phrase is the author’s fault and not the words of the Barcelona sporting director, who fully agrees with the president on this matter, as he wanted to emphasize. On our part, we can only accept the poor wording, offering our apologies, obviously, to Deco, who has nothing to do with it.”

This clarification follows the publication of Deco’s words yesterday, which stirred significant controversy. “The method is exhausted, and we need to break with the past,” he reportedly said, also suggesting that Laporta was on the same page. “The new direction is fundamental, and the president agrees with me on this. A profound change is needed. There is a method that is exhausted.”
