Victor Font: ‘I’d Run for Sure if Elections Were Tomorrow

Victor Font, a candidate for the FC Barcelona presidency in the 2021 elections, asserted on Tuesday that he cannot guarantee his return to the electoral arena in 2026. However, he specified that “if elections were tomorrow, I’d run for sure.” Font called for a change in Joan Laporta’s presidential management model and emphasized the need for more transparency.

“I’m not sure if I’ll run in 2026; it will depend on the context in two years. But if elections were tomorrow, I’d run for sure because our diagnosis of the club’s situation and the necessary solution aligns with what we’ve been working on for a long time,” Font said on the Tot Costa program of Catalunya Ràdio. He also predicted that Joan Laporta will run again in the 2026 elections because “his life is Barça.”

Font added, “The analysis we make of the current club situation advises it.” The only reason he wouldn’t run, he commented, would be if “the solutions needed by Barça in all areas – social, economic, and sporting – were implemented. When things are done well, sporting results eventually come.”

Font is not convinced by the balance of Laporta’s first three years in office because, among other things, “we lack an executive structure, and we need a relevant CEO. We need to transform the club and the management model to protect the ownership model. If I run, the goal will be to protect the ownership model and win the Champions League because the model of the 80s doesn’t work. We need executives to outline strategic lines and leave the day-to-day operations to those who know.”

Critical of Barcelona’s Transfer Policy

In addition to confirming his candidacy if the FC Barcelona presidential elections were held tomorrow, Victor Font criticized the club’s transfer policy. “We’ve spent 43 million on players who don’t play,” he declared.

“We’ve spent 43 million euros on players who don’t play: 40 on Vítor Roque [the club reported paying 30 million plus another 31 based on variables] and 3 on Oriol Romeu,” Font commented.
