The speculation surrounding Ansu Fati’s future away from Barça heats up Xavi Hernández once again comes to Oriol Romeu’s defense: “He’s necessary and he helps us a lot”

It hasn’t been the easiest season for Oriol Romeu. The midfielder started on a good note after a solid preseason, but his prominence at FC Barcelona has gradually diminished. In an interview with ‘RAC1,’ the player opened up about his feelings, stating, “There have been moments when I’ve struggled, like when I don’t enjoy playing. It’s happened to me a few times this year.”

Throughout the season, Romeu has been linked with a return to his former club, Girona, once the current campaign concludes. While acknowledging the difficulty of leaving Girona, playing for Barça has been a lifelong dream. When asked about a potential return to Michel’s side, the Ulldecona native is clear: “I want to finish this season with good sensations. If I feel like I can enjoy playing here next season, I’ll go all out. But I’ll have to be honest with myself.” Romeu still has two seasons left on his contract with FC Barcelona, but that wouldn’t deter him from leaving the club if necessary. He prioritizes other factors, such as comfort and family, over money. “Next season, we’ll assess and decide based on what’s on the table.”

The Barcelona midfielder has been notably self-critical in the interview. He acknowledges that “it hasn’t been an easy year” for him, but he’s learning a lot day by day. His main goal is to feel satisfied at the end of the year and have no regrets. Romeu explained the toughest moments of the season: “It’s been difficult to overcome moments where I’ve disappointed teammates or the coach.”

“You have to earn continuity. Honestly, I haven’t been able to show the coach that he could trust me consistently,” Romeu responded regarding his limited minutes in recent months. He also mentioned that criticisms don’t affect him, revealing that he hasn’t checked social media or read sports news for three or four months.
