Xavi Plans Lineup Changes Ahead of Busy Schedule

With a packed schedule including a recent match against Real Sociedad on Monday and an upcoming game against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, Xavi Hernández plans to make several changes to his lineup to manage player fatigue. One of these changes might be at left-back, where Joao Cancelo could be rested.

Héctor Fort, a 17-year-old defender from La Masia who has been training with the first team for several months, is expected to step in. Fort hasn’t played since April 13 against Cádiz, where he featured as a right-back. He also started two matches earlier at the Metropolitano as a left-back, performing impressively in Cancelo’s absence due to suspension and precautionary rest following a family member’s health issue.

The Barça coaching staff and management have high hopes for Fort, reflected in the club’s future plans for him. Currently contracted until June 30, 2025, with a release clause of just €10 million, Barcelona is negotiating a new contract with significant improvements for the young defender. Fort will turn 18 on August 2, at which point he can sign the new agreement, expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
