Former Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze believes Lionel Messi’s last club should be his boyhood side, Newell’s Old Boys.

Speaking to Goal in 2014, Heinze said: “Messi will retire at Newell’s, there’s no need to convince him of anything.

“I don’t see him wearing any other shirt in Argentina than that of Newell’s, and he will retire at Newell’s.”

It’s hard to say what Messi thinks about it. While at Barcelona, Leo always claimed he wants to retire as a Blaugrana. However, everything changed in 2021 when Messi had to join PSG and then moved to Inter Miami two years later.

After he crossed the ocean, he really came close to the club he left at the age of 13 but he is showing no signs of stopping. In 11 games for the MLS side, he has scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists.

There is no doubt, though, that passionate Newell’s Old Boys fans will be more than happy to see Messi return to where it all began. Whenever Leo returns to his hometown of Rosario, they greet him like a king. Which he actually is, when it comes to football, isn’t he?
