Debating the 2023 Ballon d’Or: Honigstein Advocates for Bellingham, but Is Messi’s Case Stronger?
The Athletic’s editor, Raphael Honigstein, has made a bold case for Jude Bellingham as the deserving recipient of the 2023 Ballon d’Or, asserting that the 20-year-old’s performance at Real Madrid eclipses Lionel Messi’s contributions. However, a closer look at the facts is needed.
Honigstein acknowledges Messi’s 2022 World Cup triumph with Argentina and his MLS-Liga MX Leagues Cup victory with Inter Miami, where he notched a commendable goal and two assists during the MLS regular season. Yet, Honigstein questions whether the 36-year-old Messi is currently the world’s top player or rather the best “walking footballer,” capable of periodic flashes of brilliance.
The editor suggests that Messi’s appeal to top European clubs may be limited, whereas Bellingham would attract numerous offers on an open market. He commends Bellingham’s impact at Real Madrid and his stellar performance for England, asserting that he is “the most exciting player to watch.”
However, it’s essential to note that the Ballon d’Or criteria have shifted since last year, focusing solely on performances from the previous season. Messi’s exceptional 2022-23 season with Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 21 goals and provided 20 assists, should not be overlooked. Although PSG faced an early Champions League exit, Messi’s individual performance was outstanding.
Jude Bellingham is indeed a strong contender for future Ballon d’Or awards, but based on the established rules, the 2023 Ballon d’Or should rightfully consider Messi’s exceptional performance in the previous season, which included the historic World Cup campaign. Messi’s achievements should be recognized, making him a deserving candidate for the prestigious accolade.
