FIFA Imposes Three Year Ban on Luis Rubiales for Controversial Kissing Incident
Former Spain FA boss, Luis Rubiales, has been handed a three-year ban by FIFA following the controversial kissing scandal involving Barcelona Femení icon, Jenni Hermoso. The incident occurred on live TV as Rubiales planted a kiss on Hermoso’s lips while celebrating Spain’s historic Women’s World Cup victory in August.
The gesture has since been labeled as sexual harassment and assault, leading to Rubiales’ resignation from his position as RFEF president. FIFA’s decision, which cites a breach of Article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, prohibits Rubiales from engaging in any football-related activities.
Rubiales has the option to appeal the decision within 10 days via the FIFA Appeal Committee, although prospects of a different verdict appear slim. In addition to FIFA’s action, Rubiales faces a legal battle in a Spanish court, where Hermoso is suing him for sexual harassment. Both parties have provided statements, and if found guilty, Rubiales may potentially face a prison sentence or a substantial fine.
