Lionel Messi’s Historic Jerseys Set to Break Records in Monumental Auction
Lionel Messi is poised to make history by smashing the world record for the costliest jersey auction ever. According to Sports Mail, the Argentine football icon will put up for auction six jerseys worn during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with an astounding price tag of $10 million (£8 million) or more.
These six shirts include those worn by Messi in two group stage games, the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final. If Messi manages to auction a shirt for more than £8 million, he will surpass the record set by basketball legend Michael Jordan, who sold his Chicago Bulls jersey worn in 1998 for £8.1 million last year.
Even if Messi falls short of breaking the record, his memorabilia is still expected to surpass the existing record for a football jersey auction, currently held by Diego Maradona’s Hand of God jersey, which sold for £7 million to an anonymous bidder.
Brahm Wachter, head of the company organizing the auction, expressed the significance of these jerseys, stating, “The 2022 FIFA World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically connected to Messi’s valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all time.”
Wachter added, “The sale of these six shirts stands as a monumental occasion in auction history, offering fans and collectors a connection to Messi’s crowning achievement. It is an honor for Sotheby’s to present and exhibit these invaluable collectibles to the public, which encapsulate the sheer brilliance of a player who has redefined the boundaries of football excellence.”
