In a surprising move, La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, announced his resignation from the post on Wednesday, paving the way for a new electoral process. Tebas expressed his intention to run again in the forthcoming elections, seeking the endorsement and trust of the clubs to tackle the challenges ahead.

On the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Tebas stated, “A few minutes ago I presented my resignation as president of La Liga, prior to the end of my term of office, which ends on 23 December. A new electoral process will be opened in which I will stand again.”

La Liga confirmed the initiation of an electoral commission, commencing the process immediately. The expedited timeline aims to avoid overlapping with the presidential elections for the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) scheduled for the first trimester of 2024.

As of now, Tebas is the sole candidate for the elections, aiming for a fourth consecutive mandate. The 61-year-old assumed the role of La Liga president in April 2013, securing re-election in October 2016 and December 2019. Explore the dynamics of Tebas’s resignation and the upcoming electoral process shaping the leadership of La Liga.
