Inaki Pena Reflects on Rayo Draw, VAR Controversy, and Midweek Uncertainties
In the aftermath of Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano, goalkeeper Inaki Pena shared his thoughts on the match, particularly addressing the VAR controversy surrounding Rayo’s opening goal. Pena, who made his first start of the season in place of the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen, acknowledged the challenges posed by Rayo’s playing style but expressed satisfaction with the team’s second-half performance.
“If they interfered with me in the first goal? From the goal, it was very difficult to see it; that’s what the VAR is for. It’s a shame about the goal,” Pena commented in an interview with AS. “We knew that they, with crosses and high pressure, make it difficult for the opposition. I wanted to convey a sense of tranquility to the team.”
Despite the disappointment of conceding, Pena highlighted the team’s improvement in the second half, stating, “I’m happy. The first half cost us more; the goal was a shame. In the second half, we were superior, and the goal came. We took Rayo out of our half, which is what we wanted.”
However, Pena’s performance did not entirely convince fans, leaving uncertainty about his inclusion in the starting lineup for the upcoming midweek clash against Porto. As Barcelona navigates a congested fixture schedule, the decision regarding the goalkeeper position remains an intriguing aspect for coach Xavi.
