Pep Guardiola Fondly Remembers Terry Venables: A Visionary Barcelona Coach and Charismatic Figure

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to the late Terry Venables, characterizing him as a visionary and charismatic Barcelona coach whose influence left an indelible mark on the club. Venables, who passed away at the age of 80, was hailed by Guardiola for breaking an 11-year La Liga title drought for Barcelona.

“As a Barcelona fan, he gave us the first La Liga after 11 years. His impact there was incredible,” Guardiola shared with reporters on Monday.

Reflecting on Venables’ coaching style, Guardiola noted, “He introduced something that had never been seen before, especially a certain type of pressing and set pieces. I remember how many goals our central defender scored. It’s a big loss to English football.”

While Guardiola did not play under Venables, the latter’s stint at Barcelona in 1984 left a lasting impression. Venables guided Barcelona to their first La Liga title in over a decade in 1985 and led them to the European Cup final a year later, though they suffered a shocking defeat to Steaua Bucharest on penalties.

Guardiola, who later captained Barcelona and became one of their greatest managers, recalled his time as a ballboy during Venables’ era. “I was only a ballboy, but the impact in that time on the way they played… I remember talking to friends of mine who played with him and their words for him, not just as a manager but as a person,” Guardiola reminisced.

Describing Venables’ off-field charisma, Guardiola added, “He was so funny, singing Frank Sinatra on Catalan shows. He was a proper, proper man.”
