Yan Couto’s Success at Girona Unveils What Could Have Been at Barcelona

Yan Couto’s impactful contributions have been a driving force behind Girona’s unexpected rise to the top of La Liga this season. The 21-year-old Brazilian, currently on loan from Manchester City, played a pivotal role in Girona’s stunning 4-2 victory over Barcelona last weekend.

Interestingly, Couto revealed that his football journey could have taken a different turn in 2020. Despite initially expecting to join Barcelona, Manchester City, led by Pep Guardiola’s intervention, secured his signature.

“When I was champion with the Brazilian national team (2019 U17 World Cup), I visited Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona. I was sure I was going to Barcelona, but Pep Guardiola called me and things changed,” Couto shared.

Reflecting on Girona’s success, Couto emphasized the crucial role played by head coach Michel Sanchez. According to the young talent, Sanchez’s guidance has been instrumental in Girona’s rise to the top of La Liga.

“We are very lucky to have a coach like him. He is the reason for us being at the top.”

While Couto could have potentially addressed Barcelona’s right-back challenges in 2020, his impressive performances at Girona might once again put him on the radar for the Blaugrana in the upcoming summer.
