Barcelona Faces Further Scrutiny in Ongoing Investigation Over Enriquez Negreira Payment Scandal
It has been almost a year since the news first surfaced regarding Barcelona’s alleged involvement with Enriquez Negreira during his tenure as Vice-President of the Referees Committee (CTA) in Spain. The Catalan club remains under investigation by Spanish authorities, having faced charges towards the end of 2023.
Spanish prosecutors and La Guardia Civil are actively pursuing the case, and according to reports, the focus is now on Barcelona’s “modus operandi” during the period in which payments were made to Negreira. El Mundo reveals that the Civil Guard is keen to understand how the internal protocol was structured within the club to facilitate payments to Negreira over nearly two decades. This development is expected to expand the scope of the investigation, implicating more individuals associated with the case.
In light of these new proceedings, Judge Joaquin Aguirre aims to identify who authorized the payments, whether there were instructions to conceal them in the accounts, who communicated that these transactions should not be reflected in the financial records, and who was directly responsible for executing the payments to Enriquez Negreira.
Throughout the investigation, Barcelona has consistently denied any wrongdoing. As the case approaches its one-year mark, it continues to cast a shadow over Spanish football, generating significant concern and debate among other clubs.
