Simeone Addresses VAR Controversy Ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Copa del Rey Clash with Sevilla

Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, has weighed in on the ongoing VAR scandal, sparked by Real Madrid’s controversial win over Almeria. Following the release of audio from the VAR room, revealing errors in decision-making, Simeone expressed frustration at the focus on leaks rather than the content.

Simeone acknowledged the pressure referees face, stating, “The VAR improves them but exposes them too.” He emphasized the need for transparency in the discussions about the leaks, focusing on the substance rather than the act of leaking. He added, “They think we are all stupid, and that makes us angry.”

Regarding officiating in general, Simeone stressed the importance of natural decision-making, acknowledging that mistakes can happen, but a natural flow is crucial for the game. He highlighted the challenges referees face, urging everyone to stay calm and play the game amidst complicated moments.

Despite the VAR controversy, Simeone expressed optimism about Atletico Madrid’s growth and praised the efforts of players like Morata.
