Controversial Decisions Shadow FC Barcelona’s First-Half Struggles

The first half couldn’t have gone much worse for FC Barcelona. Xavi’s side struggled through uninspiring 45 minutes, finding themselves at the mercy of Villarreal, who entered halftime with a lead thanks to a goal from Gerard Moreno.

The so-called ‘controversial’ incident, which, in reality, wasn’t controversial at all, unfolded in the 23rd minute of play.

The play had its share of controversy, starting with a possible foul by Baena on Kounde inside the box during a contested ball that eventually found its way to Gerard Moreno’s feet. However, the Villarreal forward cleverly utilized a screen by Sorloth, who was offside, to evade Araujo’s defense and slot the ball into Iñaki Peña’s net. Despite protests from the captain and Marcelino, both incredulous at the referee’s decision, VAR footage leaves no room for doubt.

SECOND DISALLOWED GOAL Gerard Moreno’s goal wasn’t the only one ruled out for Villarreal in the first half. Munuera Montero had already nullified Álex Baena’s goal just three minutes into the game. On this occasion, there was little protest from the Yellow Submarine players, as the midfielder was clearly offside at the time of the pass.
