The visit of Lucas Bergvall to Barcelona has dominated headlines in the Barcelona transfer market. The young Swedish international, who turns 18 this Friday, landed in the Catalan capital to have discussions with Barcelona’s sporting director, Anderson Luis de Souza ‘Deco.’ The midfielder’s transfer to the Blaugrana is progressing according to the planned steps, following the same routine he had when, at just 16 years old, he signed with his current club, Djurgarden, in December 2022.

In that year, at the age Lamine Yamal is currently at FC Barcelona, Bergvall had already made his debut in Brommapojkarnas’ first team, playing a total of eleven matches in the Superettan (Swedish Second Division) and contributing to his club’s promotion to the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top football tier.

At that time, Bergvall was already considered one of the great teenage talents in Swedish football. In the debut of 2024, the Swedish football scene is experiencing a surge in signings, with 16-year-old striker Jona Kusi-Asare from AIK joining Bayern Munich, 18-year-old Häcken forward Momodou Sonko moving to Gent, and 15-year-old AIK Solna attacking midfielder Luka Petrovic transferring to Real Sociedad.

Methodical in midfield, where he confidently displays his 1.87-meter frame as a professional, Bergvall is also meticulous in navigating each step of his budding career.

Born on February 2, 2006, he is the standout Swedish player of his generation, leading teams that have won international tournaments, attracting the attention of major European clubs since 2019, including Bayern. As captain in the Swedish youth national teams, he chose not to leave his country prematurely. In 2022, he preferred to sign with Djurgarden until 2025 instead of accepting more lucrative foreign offers. He combined his football career with studies, stating, “You never know what will happen in the future, and it’s good to have something to build on.”

His final decision to join Djurgarden was not made lightly. Bergvall explained, “We had a meeting about a week ago, and that made it easier to choose Djurgarden. When you can clearly see that both the coaches and the club really want you to come, you feel good. Confirming how Djurgarden operates, seeing the Kaknäs sports city, meeting the physio team, and interacting with those who work in the club all reinforced that impression and played a clear role in my choice,” he revealed in the winter of 2022.

Djurgarden’s sporting director, Bosse Andersson, praised Bergvall, noting his “blend of confidence and humility” and recognizing him as “one of the most promising talents in Sweden, courted by many clubs abroad.” Anderson expressed pride in Bergvall’s decision to continue growing in Sweden despite numerous foreign offers. Bergvall emphasized that his choice was not just about money but about the feeling he had. “It was a perfect step for me and my career. It’s not just about money; the most important thing is the feeling you have. Everything was very good when I came here to Djurgarden, and I had a clear idea of how Bosse and Peter Kisfaludy (sports coordinator) work in the club,” affirmed the young footballer.
