Bergvall Reveals Why He Chose Tottenham Over Barcelona

During the past winter transfer window, Barcelona’s sports management worked on securing the signing of Lucas Bergvall, one of the most promising talents in European football. The Djurgardens midfielder even traveled to Barcelona to meet with Deco.

The deal seemed sealed. Djurgardens agreed to Barcelona’s offer: seven million plus an additional three in variables. Only the player’s approval was pending. Barcelona was the preferred choice for the young Swedish midfielder, and the meeting in Barcelona left positive impressions. However, Bergvall ultimately opted for Tottenham, the other club that aggressively bid for his services. The Spurs won the race, and Bergvall will join them for the next five seasons in the summer, concluding the current season with Djurgardens.

Barça’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, explained that the club chose not to engage in a bidding war with Tottenham: “That’s how the market works. One club offered more, and we felt we shouldn’t offer more.”

Four days after saying ‘yes’ to the Spurs, Bergvall has given his version of events, explaining the reasons that led him to choose the London club over Barcelona. He shared his perspective in an interview with ‘Sportbladet.’ “Both are incredible clubs, and the choice was very difficult,” Bergvall begins, noting that Tottenham seemed more convinced: “The decision was at 50 percent for a long time, but I felt that the next step for me was Tottenham.”

“It wasn’t easy to say no to Barcelona,” acknowledges the Swedish midfielder before concluding, “It took a long time to decide.”
