Ferran Torres Ready to Embrace Paris 2024 Olympics Despite International Commitments
FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres has expressed his willingness to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics if selected. The Spanish international, a regular in the national team, reportedly responded positively to the call from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), inquiring about his readiness to join the Olympic squad despite being a full-fledged international.
According to ‘Relevo,’ the RFEF contacted Ferran Torres due to the Olympic tournament’s regulations, stipulating that only players born on or after January 1, 2001, are eligible. Torres, born on February 29, 2000, falls slightly outside this age range. Hence, the federation sought to confirm whether Torres, though already a senior international, would be willing to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, given his age.
The player’s response has been entirely positive, positioning Ferran in the preliminary list of senior players over 23 who can fill one of the three slots available. According to the regulations, only players under 23 or those who turn 23 in the year of the Olympics can participate. As Ferran Torres will have turned 24, he qualifies for one of the designated spots.
Spain has secured a place in the Olympic tournament as the runner-up in the last U21 Eurocup, with fourteen out of the 23 players born in the year 2000. Although Ferran did not participate in that U21 tournament, considering that he was already part of Luis de la Fuente’s senior squad (with 40 caps and 18 goals), he belongs to the same generation that clinched the U17 and U19 European titles.
It’s worth noting that Ferran Torres is a regular in the senior national team under Luis de la Fuente. Spain is set to compete in the Eurocup in Germany from June 14 to July 14 next summer. In the event of Spain reaching the Eurocup final, Torres would have a mere ten-day gap before the commencement of the Olympic event.
