When Will the Next FC Barcelona Presidential Elections Be Held?
FC Barcelona’s unique feature allows its members to democratically choose the club’s president in each electoral period. The last election took place exactly three years ago on March 7, 2021, when Joan Laporta secured victory with 54.28% of the votes, marking the beginning of his second term at the helm of the Barcelona entity.
This morning, former presidential candidate Victor Font, who secured the second position in the last elections with 29.99%, issued an open letter to the club’s members, presenting himself as an alternative to the current board’s management.
In his letter, Font states, “The only solution to protect the ownership model that makes us a unique club in the world and ensure that we can compete at the elite level is through the club’s restructuring. Changing the management model, professionalizing the institution, modernizing governance, and providing ourselves with real and effective external control mechanisms […] we have to stop managing the club as it was done in the 1980s.”
According to FC Barcelona’s statutes, the term of the board is simultaneous for all members and lasts for five calendar years, starting on July 1 and ending on June 30. Therefore, the first term of Joan Laporta’s second stint as president of FC Barcelona would conclude on June 30, 2026.
Additionally, the president of the board can serve in the position for a maximum of two consecutive terms, while other board members can be re-elected indefinitely. Hence, Laporta could choose to run for the presidency in the upcoming elections.
