Napoli vs. Genoa: Osimhen Ruled Out, Resting for Barcelona Clash

In the buildup to the Champions League Round of 16 clash against FC Barcelona, Napoli prepares to face Genoa in Serie A’s 25th matchday. Victor Osimhen, returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, will be absent for rest ahead of the crucial Barcelona encounter.

After securing the Scudetto last season, Napoli’s performance dipped following Spalletti’s departure, and Rudi García’s stint on the bench proved unsuccessful. The arrival of Walter Mazzarri in November hasn’t significantly improved the situation, but the team comfortably progressed to the Champions League knockout stage, with Mazzarri dismissing rumors of his potential dismissal.

Napoli suffered a recent defeat at San Siro (1-0), struggling against top-tier Serie A opponents. Additionally, their home performance at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium ranks 12th in the league. However, Napoli has been more effective on the road, standing as the 4th best away team.

The absence of top scorer Victor Osimhen will be felt by Napoli. Having lost the Africa Cup of Nations final on Monday and missing his return flight to Italy, Osimhen, who only trained this afternoon, still experiences physical discomfort. Mazzarri has chosen to rest him in preparation for the crucial Round of 16 match against Barcelona.

While Osimhen sits out, Napoli anticipates the return of goalkeeper Meret, who has been sidelined since last year but resumed training early this week. Brazilian defender Natan, inactive since 2024, has been training for two weeks and is ready for action.

Mazzarri will also have Hamed Traorè, the Ivorian midfielder on loan from Bournemouth, as a replacement for the suspended Zielinski in the Champions League squad.
