Esmee Brugts: ‘We’re Excited to Face the World Champion Alexia Ruled Out for Nations League Semifinal
Netherlands and FC Barcelona forward, Esmee Brugts, expressed anticipation ahead of the Nations League semifinal against Spain, highlighting the enthusiasm within the Dutch team to face the reigning world champions. Brugts commended Spain’s style of play and acknowledged the desire to rectify their previous World Cup encounter.
Speaking in a press conference after the team’s training at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, Brugts clarified that it’s not about revenge but an opportunity to address shortcomings from the 2023 World Cup, where the Netherlands was eliminated by Spain in the quarterfinals.
“The key aspect of Spanish play is how they position themselves on the field. It’s something I also notice at Barcelona, something I enjoy on the pitch, and something admired by many other national teams facing the Spanish squad,” emphasized the Barcelona player.
Reflecting on her time at Barcelona, Brugts mentioned that she has “learned a lot in the last six months” since joining the team and considers it an “honor to play for the biggest club.” At 20 years old, she emphasized the valuable experience gained while playing alongside talented teammates.
While expressing her recent preference for playing as a forward, specifically as a ‘9’, Brugts acknowledged the tactical differences between her role at Barcelona and with the national team.
Regarding her Barcelona teammates, she highlighted the warm welcome she received from established players like Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí. Brugts praised Alexia’s kindness, lamenting that they haven’t played much together due to Alexia’s injury.
