Barcelona Revokes Dani Alves’ Status as Club Legend Amid Legal Troubles

0

Barcelona has decided to strip Dani Alves of his status as a club legend, a recognition held by 102 footballers who have donned the blaugrana jersey since the club’s founding on November 29, 1899. Recent additions to this list include Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Gerard Piqué, with the founding figure Joan Gamper leading the way.

The club approached this decision cautiously, maintaining the presumption of innocence for the Brazilian, who entered preventive custody on January 20, 2023, awaiting trial. Barcelona executed this symbolic act after the sexual assault sentence against Dani Alves became final. Alves was sentenced on December 22 by the Barcelona Court to four years and six months in prison, a verdict his lawyer, Inés Guardiola, has already announced plans to appeal.

Dani Alves earned the status of a club legend at Barcelona through his remarkable tenure, playing 408 matches over eight and a half seasons in two stints. His illustrious career included the conquest of three Champions League titles, three Supercopas de España, three Club World Cups, six La Liga championships, four Copa del Rey triumphs, and four Supercopas de España.
