Everton’s Initial Response to Barcelona’s Interest in Onana
Barcelona’s pursuit of Amadou Onana from Everton faces early challenges as the Spanish club’s offer falls short of the English club’s valuation. The 22-year-old Belgian midfielder, standing at an imposing 1.95 meters, has drawn the attention of Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, as the Catalan club aims to bolster its physical presence.
Despite initial discussions, economic disparities have not been bridged, making the potential acquisition more complex for Barcelona. Onana, who has excelled for Everton in the current season, became a target for Deco in the quest to reinforce the team physically. Everton, dealing with institutional issues and point deductions, is open to the idea of selling the player they acquired from Lille for €35 million.
Competing interest from Arsenal and Manchester United further complicates the situation, as both English clubs have indicated their desire to secure Onana for the upcoming season and are prepared to present offers when the transfer window opens. The financial capacity of these clubs matches Everton’s valuation, making them more attractive options.
Given Barcelona’s willingness to offer €40 million, €20 million below Everton’s asking price, the English club is not inclined to favor the Catalan option. Everton has communicated to Barcelona’s representatives that they are unwilling to lower the price, firmly standing by their initial valuation of Onana, which includes variables. As negotiations unfold, Deco may need to explore alternative solutions, potentially involving player exchanges, to sway Everton’s stance.
