Nico’s Radical Transformation at Porto: ‘He Found His Place

Nico González, formerly of Barcelona, has undergone a remarkable change at Porto, transitioning from a sidelined player to a consistent starter under coach Sérgio Conceição’s demanding methodology. The 22-year-old midfielder, now firmly established in the starting lineup, reflects on his journey and adaptation to the challenges posed by Conceição.

“When I met Sérgio Conceição on the day I signed for Porto, after the preseason match against Rayo Vallecano, he instilled confidence in me and made it clear that I had to work hard. At first, adapting to a new place is always difficult, but I was eager and believe I quickly adjusted to the demands,” stated Nico just a week ago.

Nico’s resurgence is noteworthy, given Conceição’s reputation for shaping and gradually integrating new players into the team. “Playing for Porto is not easy, even if you come from Barcelona,” acknowledged the coach. Nico’s recent run of five starts in the last six matches showcases his adaptability and commitment to overcoming challenges.

“He understood what he has to do within our principles. This is Nico’s merit; he continued to work hard every day, even when not initially called up, and I am very aware of that. It has been a meritorious effort,” acknowledged Conceição.

The turning point for the academy graduate came when he started gaining minutes but committed an error against Arouca, leading to the equalizing goal. This setback led to a period of ostracism, requiring him to work diligently to regain Conceição’s trust.

Portuguese journalist Luís Cristovao sheds light on Nico’s transformation: “The team’s needs and his performance in training have helped him. At Porto, it’s normal for a player to take time to find his place. When Sergio changed the system to a 4-2-3-1, Nico found his spot.”

Nico now forms a double pivot with Varela, a more defensive profile, and has adjusted to Conceição’s preferred style. With a resounding performance against Arsenal, the ex-Barcelona player has caught the attention of his former club. Although sold to Porto for €8.5 million with a buyback option, Barcelona retains the right to repurchase him for €30 million and a percentage of any future sale.
