Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, shared valuable insights today to conclude the ‘Sports Tomorrow Congress’ within the ‘Mobile World Congress,’ held in Barcelona over the past few days. The MWC stands as the world’s most significant technological congress, and Barcelona’s involvement, particularly through the Barça Innovation Hub, played a crucial role in the discussions during these two days. The sporting director took center stage in the final talk of the congress, focusing on how technology has influenced player recruitment.
“Previously, we needed scouts; now, everything has changed significantly. Nowadays, it’s impossible for a young player not to be known anywhere in the world; it’s easier to discover talent,” expressed the Portuguese, highlighting how technology has revolutionized the search for new talent. Deco emphasized that when a player excels these days, it’s impossible for them not to gain recognition in a matter of days. Despite technological advancements enhancing certain aspects of scouting, Deco believes that “in a team sport, the key is understanding the type of players you need for your team, something technology is still unable to do.”
