Raphinha Faces ‘Examination’ in the Midfield Square: Xavi’s Tactical Adjustment
The FC Barcelona is gearing up for the upcoming match against RCD Mallorca this Friday at Montjuïc, with key players Pedri and Frenkie de Jong sidelined, leaving the team with limited options. In response to this challenge, coach Xavi is considering altering Raphinha’s position, typically stationed on the right-wing.
Given Lamine Yamal’s consolidation on the right-wing, Raphinha has found himself either as a substitute or adapting to a different role. In the recent match against Bilbao, when Lamine entered the field, the Brazilian shifted to the left-wing. However, instead of maintaining his wide position, Xavi instructed him to function as a fourth midfielder, moving inside.
Admittedly, Raphinha struggled to find his rhythm in the left apex of the midfield square. While the team faced difficulties in generating opportunities, the former Leeds player appeared uncomfortable operating closer to Lewandowski, who also had limited involvement in threatening plays.
In recent days, Xavi has been experimenting with Raphinha in a more central role, deviating from his natural position. However, it is on the right apex of the square where the attacker performs at his best. Earlier this season, he played in that position against Sevilla, impressing until an unfortunate injury forced him off just before halftime.
Xavi seems to be considering deploying Raphinha centrally in the upcoming games, completing the forward section of the midfield square, with either Fermín or Joao Félix occupying the left profile of the midfield. Opting for the latter would result in an especially offensive lineup, effectively fielding Barcelona with four forwards.
