Ter Stegen Stresses Importance of Barça’s Key Players Ahead of Crucial Clash with Napoli
As FC Barcelona gears up for a crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Napoli, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen emphasized the significance of certain players in the team during a press conference. Approaching his 400th appearance for Barcelona, ter Stegen reflected on the team’s journey, expressing a desire for more Champions League success.
“We’ve come close, but haven’t succeeded due to our own mistakes. Tomorrow is a new opportunity,” said the German goalkeeper with a subtle smile. Ter Stegen exuded his customary calmness and confidence, noting his pivotal role in the team’s defensive improvement.
Acknowledging the challenges during his injury absence, ter Stegen discussed his return to form, stating, “Every injury has its low points, but you always come back with good feelings. It’s a tough time where you learn a lot, but you always return with positive sensations.”
Ter Stegen also praised fellow goalkeepers Iñaki Peña and Pau Cubarsí for stepping up in his absence, particularly highlighting Cubarsí’s mature performances. “Cubarsí is doing a spectacular job at his age. He’s accessible and open to improvement. He’s in spectacular form, and we need to capitalize on that,” he remarked.
The goalkeeper touched on Andreas Christensen’s pivotal role as a midfielder, providing balance to the team. However, he remained cautious about discussing the potential arrival of Hansi Flick, emphasizing the team’s focus on the upcoming match against Napoli as the most important of the season.
Reflecting on Xavi Hernandez’s impending departure as the team’s coach, ter Stegen acknowledged the impact of the decision on the squad. “It’s a great loss. He’s a fantastic coach who brought us back to this level. It’s challenging to accept his departure, both as a player and as a friend,” he concluded, underscoring the need for the team to give their best, not just for themselves but also for Xavi.
