Joao Félix’s Shirt Burned at the Metropolitano: Tensions High Ahead of Atlético-FC Barcelona Clash
In anticipation of the Atlético-FC Barcelona match in the EA Sports League, it was no surprise that Joao Félix found himself at the center of criticism and anger at the Civitas Metropolitano. Recent episodes involving the Portuguese player, especially his clashes with Simeone last summer during preseason, foreshadowed a heated reception.
As expected, the focus turned to his plaque in the club’s ‘hall of fame’ near their stadium. Fans were seen throwing trash, spitting, and hurling insults. The most extreme act was the burning of an Atlético jersey with his name on it atop the tribute to the Portuguese player.
Accompanying the burning of Joao’s shirt were obscene chants, reminiscent of those directed at Luis Figo in Barcelona years ago. It’s important to note that the forward is on loan from Atlético and is set to return on June 30.
Speaking about the upcoming match, Joao acknowledged the challenging atmosphere: “It’s going to be a tough environment for the whole team. It’ll be a bit worse for me, but as a football player, I have to be accustomed to these things… It motivates me more; I like these important and spicy matches; there’s extra motivation.”
