Font Criticizes FC Barcelona’s Transfer Policy and Outlines Key Election Factors
Víctor Font, in a recent appearance on the Tot Costa program of Catalunya Ràdio, not only affirmed his certain candidacy if FC Barcelona’s presidential elections were tomorrow but also expressed criticism towards the club’s transfer policy. He bluntly stated, “We’ve spent 43 million euros on players who don’t play.”
“We’ve spent 43 million euros on players who don’t play: 40 on Vítor Roque [the club initially reported paying 30 million plus an additional 31 based on variables] and 3 on Oriol Romeu,” Font commented. Additionally, he emphasized the need for “a sporting director,” asserting that FC Barcelona requires this figure, akin to “what Txiki Begiristain used to do, assessing the team’s needs.” Font believes the sporting director should consult the technical secretariat to provide “alternatives for positions to reinforce,” a task he feels is not currently fulfilled by Deco.
Champions League Ambitions
Regarding the Champions League, Font expressed his dream of being at Wembley on June 1st, watching Barcelona in the final, albeit not against Manchester City. He predicted City’s elimination of Real Madrid in the quarterfinals but left room for surprise in the semifinals. Font envisioned a final between Barcelona and Bayern Munich, stating, “It could go this way.”
He added that winning the Champions League holds a special allure for Barça fans, emphasizing that victory is possible even without being the best team. “It’s the Champions League. We have examples of what I’m saying.”
Regarding a circulated photo of him wearing a City jersey, Font clarified, “With a group of friends, we went to support our Catalan friends leading the project. I wore the shirt because I support my friends, and that day, I wanted what was best for City.”
