Ansu Fati’s Absence: De Zerbi Calls for Physical Improvement at Brighton

Brighton & Hove Albion’s head coach, Roberto de Zerbi, who has recently been linked to FC Barcelona following Xavi Hernández’s impending departure on June 30, explained that Spanish forward Ansu Fati was omitted from the squad for the Brentford match due to concerns over his physical condition. Fati, currently on loan from FC Barcelona until the end of the season, was on the bench for the recent game against Liverpool but did not play a single minute. Moreover, he was left out of the squad altogether for the goalless draw against Brentford on Wednesday.

“I decided that Fati and Valentín Barco wouldn’t be involved in this match. I wanted them to work individually and improve their physical condition,” stated De Zerbi.

Fati’s season at Brighton has been underwhelming, having scored four goals and provided one assist in the majority of his 26 appearances as a substitute.

“Fati is putting in a lot of effort, but I have different expectations for him. My opinion of him hasn’t changed. He is one of the best talents in the world for his age, but he needs to enhance his performances, improve his physical condition, and strengthen his mentality. In the Premier League, you need to be mentally and physically stronger. When he demonstrates that he’s ready, he’ll be able to play for us,” explained the Italian coach.

Fati has been playing for Brighton on loan since September 1, 2023, under an agreement between FC Barcelona and Brighton & Hove Albion, which lasts until June 30, 2024, without an option to buy included in the deal.
