Pedri and De Jong Facing Their ‘Final’ Battle to Make it to Paris

With less than a week remaining before the crucial PSG-Barça clash, Xavi Hernández still faces personnel concerns. The Blaugrana continue preparations for Wednesday’s showdown at Parc des Princes, yet Christensen, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong remain sidelined. None of the trio trained at the same intensity as their teammates during Thursday’s morning session.

Also present at training were Mbacke, Moha, Olmedo, and Pau Prim from Barça Atlètic, along with Ander Astralaga, the reserve team goalkeeper embedded in first-team training dynamics. Over the weekend, they will all play for Rafa Márquez’s side, currently vying for the top spot in Primera RFEF alongside Deportivo.

Christensen, nursing Achilles tendon discomfort in recent days, continues his injury prevention process. The aim is for Andreas to reach peak fitness for Paris, and he’s already in good condition. However, the Barça coaching staff is meticulous, hence his gradual return to group training.

Pedri and Frenkie de Jong’s situations are more delicate. Pedri progresses cautiously, with setbacks prolonging his recovery. While his outlook is positive, setbacks have led to extended timelines. Barring any setbacks, the Canary Islander will soon join group training to assess his readiness for inclusion in the Paris encounter.

‘Friendly Match’ as a Test to Assess

According to reports from ‘Catalunya Radio’, Xavi Hernández has scheduled a training match over the weekend to provide crucial match fitness. With no league fixture, the coach plans to simulate competitive conditions internally.

Pedri and Frenkie will utilize this practice to evaluate their fitness levels. SPORT previously reported De Jong’s anticipated five-week absence, a timeline that is being adhered to. If the Dutchman feels fit, he’ll make the squad.

Of the trio, Christensen is the most likely to start, with his inclusion expected. De Jong’s role remains uncertain, while Pedri’s prospects for starting are slim. At best, the Las Palmas product may feature in the latter stages of the game.
