How Does Barcelona Choose Its Jerseys for Matches?

0

Barcelona, under Xavi Hernández, has played a total of 43 official matches so far this season. Out of these, they have worn the iconic blaugrana kit in 22 matches, the senyera yellow kit in ten matches, the white kit in six matches, and the light aqua third kit in five matches. Interestingly, Barcelona has only played once in blaugrana in the 21 away matches, which was against Rayo Vallecano in Vallecas. The rest of the away matches saw them donning the senyera yellow kit ten times, the white kit five times, and the light aqua kit five times. They have consistently worn the blaugrana kit in the twenty matches played at Montjuïc, except for the two Supercopa de Arabia Saudí matches, where they wore white against Osasuna in the semifinal and blaugrana in the final against Real Madrid.

In addition to the 43 official matches, Barcelona has also played five friendly matches this season. They wore the blaugrana kit against Real Madrid in Dallas, in the Trofeo Joan Gamper, and against América in December, also in Dallas. The white kit was chosen for matches against Arsenal and Milan in the United States. In total, out of the 48 matches played this season, Barcelona has worn the blaugrana kit in 25 matches, the senyera yellow kit in ten matches, the white kit in eight matches, and the light aqua kit in five matches.

Reasons According to sources within the club consulted by SPORT, several factors contribute to the choice of jerseys. Commercial considerations play a role, as well as sentimental factors, particularly on significant dates for the club and Catalonia, such as Sant Jordi and the Diada on September 11th.

However, the primary reason is chromatic, aiming to avoid color clashes with the opposing teams. When playing away matches, Barcelona is the third to choose its kit color, after considering the home team’s kit color and the goalkeeper’s kit color. The club ensures that Barcelona’s kit does not conflict with either of the first two choices. It’s explained that the senyera yellow kit is preferred over the white kit due to potential chromatic conflicts caused by the white kit’s clear shirt and dark shorts.

Looking ahead to the end of the season, Barcelona will play at least ten more matches, including ten league matches and two Champions League matches against PSG. The club has already calculated how many times each kit will be worn, without considering potential Champions League semifinals or finals. They anticipate wearing the blaugrana kit 30 times, the senyera yellow kit 12 times, the white kit eight times, and the light aqua kit eight times.
