Mourinho Would Be a Great Signing for Barça”: Xavi’s Pre-Clásico Press Conference
Xavi Hernandez announced at the end of last January that he will leave the helm of Barça at the end of the season. While the decision could change, it’s unlikely that the Terrassa native will change his mind, with the current B team coach, Rafa Márquez, being the frontrunner to take over the first team.
Various former Barça players have voiced their opinions on who would be the ideal coach to replace Xavi. The latest, Rivaldo, made a somewhat surprising choice, as he suggested none other than the Portuguese José Mourinho, a public enemy of the Blaugrana fans after his stint with Real Madrid. “There are many fans who do not accept players or coaches who have been with the rival team, but Mourinho has already been with Barcelona and is a great person. His controversies with his own fans could be a concern from the beginning, but he is a winner,” explained the Brazilian. “Considering that he is currently without a club and the situation at Barcelona, in my opinion, I think he would be a great signing, even if some fans don’t like to hear his name. Without a doubt, he would do a great job, he knows the team, the Spanish league, the Champions League, and he has a lot of experience,” Rivaldo continued.
The former Barça player also spoke about Pep Guardiola, whom he does not see returning to the Blaugrana club. “I don’t see Guardiola coming back, at least not now. I think the only realistic opportunity would be when he wants to return and enjoy more family life, which is easier for him in Barcelona, and at the same time, he can coach the team. He’s doing well in England, and I think his return will also depend on the club’s financial situation,” he concluded.
