Robert Lewandowski was one of the players most affected when Xavi Hernández, after a painful defeat against Villarreal, announced that he would leave the Barça bench at the end of the season. The Polish forward spoke with the coach to make him reflect, and in the following days, he organized a team dinner at his home to rally together and turn the season around.

Lewy had not publicly commented on his coach’s decision until now. He did so during the ‘media day’ for international television networks that have the rights to the classic. And he did it to offer advice to his coach. “There are many media outlets that follow the day-to-day of the club and create situations and stories. Sometimes there is no issue, and one has to create it, and if someone takes all of this very emotionally, it can be very tough,” reflects Lewandowski on what it means to be at Barça.

The Polish striker hinted that this could have been the case for Xavi and did not hesitate to offer him advice: “At some point, I was also very involved in all of this and I realized that it is a situation that cannot be prolonged over time. You have to stay on the sidelines to have a correct and fresh view of the situation and not an emotional one. If you are emotionally involved in everything that happens around you, it is tough and can become unbearable.”

“No Problems in the Dressing Room”

Lewandowski also addressed the recent controversy sparked by the exchange of statements between Ilkay Gündogan and Ronald Araujo following the Uruguayan’s expulsion against PSG, which was crucial in Barça’s Champions League elimination.

“I have the impression that often the media are more concerned about these issues than we are. But I think there was nothing wrong with Ilkay’s statement and nothing that was a personal attack on the other person,” considered Lewy, who denied problems in the dressing room: “We are men. If there was something, it was probably explained, but at the moment, there is no issue in the dressing room.”
