Frenkie de Jong ruled out for the remainder of the season with ankle injury

Bad news for Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong. Medical tests conducted this afternoon confirm that the Dutch midfielder has suffered a grade II ankle sprain, sidelining him for approximately five weeks. Consequently, Frenkie will not return to play for the Blaugrana this season.

During Sunday’s match, just before halftime, De Jong twisted his right ankle in a clash with Valverde, who aggressively contested for the ball. The Barcelona player immediately fell to the ground, clutching his ankle, the same one he injured last March. He had previously suffered a different injury to the same area in the autumn, though the diagnosis was distinct from that of March, when he spent five weeks sidelined.

The medical statement from Barcelona only mentions De Jong’s ankle sprain, stating that “his availability will depend on his recovery.” According to SPORT, De Jong will definitely miss the upcoming matches against Valencia, Girona, Real Sociedad, Almería, and Rayo Vallecano. Additionally, he is likely to be unavailable for the season finale against Sevilla if Barcelona secures the second spot in the league, indicating that the midfielder may not return until next season.

However, De Jong should be ready to participate in the two friendly matches with the Dutch national team before the start of the Euro 2024. On June 6 and 10, the Netherlands will face Canada and Iceland, respectively. Then, on June 16, the European tournament begins, where Frenkie will be available for selection.
