Karim Benzema closing in on Robert Lewandowski with impressive 2023 stats
Robert Lewandowski started the season on fire and looked to be a sure bet for the top scorer award. The Barcelona star had scored 13 goals in his first 14 matches, setting a blistering pace. However, Karim Benzema has been catching up with him at an incredible speed since then.
Before the World Cup, the Frenchman had scored only five goals in seven games. But according to Marca, he has hit the back of the net 12 times in his last 14 matches, compared to just six for Lewandowski in his last 14 games. Benzema’s scoring rate has been twice that of the Polish striker. With just six games left in La Liga, it looks like a two-horse race for the Pichichi title, with Benzema gaining rapidly.
In fact, only Erling Haaland has scored more goals this year, with 27 goals in 26 games, compared to Benzema’s 23 goals in 25 games. Haaland will have the chance to go head-to-head with Benzema next week in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Lewandowski has only scored 11 goals in his 21 games over the same period.
While Lewandowski has managed to get back on the scoresheet with back-to-back goals against Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis, Benzema has been delivering masterclass performances on a regular basis. It might take something special from Lewandowski to hold off Benzema in the race for the top scorer award.
