Barcelona’s Sporting Director Jordi Cruyff is uncertain about his future at the club following the departure of Director of Football Mateu Alemany, according to reports.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Barcelona’s Director of Football, Mateu Alemany, will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Now, it appears that Sporting Director Jordi Cruyff could also be uncertain of his position at the club.
According to reports from MD, Cruyff will consider his position in the coming weeks following the departure of Alemany. Although one of his close associates, Antonio Cordon, was initially considered for the Director of Football role, that is no longer on the table.
Cruyff’s position is said to be unrelated to Alemany’s departure and is based purely on his view of the situation. The Dutch-Catalan’s contract is set to expire in September, and he typically operates on a yearly basis with contracts. However, it appears that he will have to make a decision on his future sooner than that.
Part of the reason for Alemany’s departure was reportedly the lack of decision-making power he had, which may also be a factor for Cruyff. If he agrees with the decisions being made by Xavi Hernandez and/or Joan Laporta, it may be less of an issue.
Barcelona will be hoping to avoid a mass exodus of key personnel this summer, as they look to rebuild after a disappointing season. The Catalan club has already been linked with several potential replacements for Alemany, including Deco, who has no prior experience in the role. It remains to be seen who will take over as Director of Football, and whether Cruyff will remain in his current role.
