Barcelona rules out leading candidate for Mateu Alemany’s replacement
Barcelona are currently in search of a new Director of Football following Mateu Alemany’s departure, but the leading candidate for the job, Antonio Cordon, has been ruled out. Cordon, who previously worked at Real Betis, was linked to Barcelona since February when he resigned from his position with Los Verdiblancos. However, Barcelona has decided to restructure the department and share responsibility better, potentially indicating that more than one person will be appointed.
Cordon’s relationship with Sporting Director Jordi Cruyff had been cited as one of the potential reasons that he might be brought in. The pair previously worked together at Chongqing and Ecuador. However, there have also been suggestions that Cruyff is no longer a definite to continue in his position.
Alemany has agreed to complete the transfer window with the club, which gives Barcelona some time to find a replacement. However, the fact that their recruitment department is looking to move on with a big summer ahead does not bode well for the club. It is also worth noting that Barcelona is in need of €180m in sales and savings to get back to their salary limit this summer. Raphinha, who was brought in for €58m plus €7m in variables last summer, is one of the candidates to be pushed out of Barcelona, with Newcastle United reportedly keen on bringing him to Tyneside for a record-breaking fee of €80m.
