Barcelona have secured the future of goalkeeper Inaki Pena by agreeing to a new three-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2026. Pena was out of contract this summer, and had reportedly received offers from other clubs, but has decided to remain at Barcelona as the back-up to Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Last season, Pena spent the second half of the season on loan at Galatasaray, where he impressed in Turkey. However, with the departure of Neto to Bournemouth, Pena returned to Camp Nou to continue as ter Stegen’s understudy.

Pena has played just three times this season, twice in the Copa del Rey and once in the Champions League, conceding five goals in those games. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old is highly regarded at Camp Nou for his shot-stopping ability and excellent distribution. Pena joined Barcelona at the age of 10 and has been with the club for 10 years. His new contract extension will extend his stay in Catalonia to 17 years, should he see it out. With ter Stegen having an historic season in goal, Pena will likely continue in his role as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper.
