Sevilla Women’s team ended Barcelona Femeni’s remarkable 62 game domestic winning streak in a thrilling encounter at the Jesús Navas Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Barcelona Femeni has been the dominant force in Spanish women’s football in recent years, having wrapped up their fourth consecutive La Liga F title this season. Their dominance has been nothing short of remarkable, having won every single domestic match last season and were on course to repeat that feat this season, with a winning run of 62 matches until Wednesday evening.
However, their winning run came to an end after being held to a 1-1 draw against Sevilla. The hosts took a shock lead through Cristina Martin-Prieto Gutierrez, and although Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic equalized late on, Barcelona was unable to extend their winning streak into a 63rd match. Nevertheless, their run is an outstanding feat.
The last time Barcelona failed to win a domestic match was back in June 2021 when they lost to Atletico Madrid 4-3. Since then, they had won every single match until Sevilla ended their unbeaten run.
Barcelona will aim to get back to winning ways in their final two league matches as they strive to complete another unbeaten season. After that, they will face Wolfsburg in the Women’s Champions League final in June. Despite their remarkable winning streak coming to an end, Barcelona remains a strong contender for the title and will be eager to bounce back and add another trophy to their impressive collection.
